“Today my respect for that idiot shot up. Most of us went to college just for a degree. No degree meant no plum job, no pretty wife, no credit card, no social status. But none of this mattered to him, he was in college for the joy of learning, he never cared if he was first or last.”

That idiot’s name? Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad, also known as Rancho, but better known as Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan.

3 Idiots (2009) is a 56-award-winning movie (including the Japanese Academy Awards) that you should watch RIGHT NOW, if you haven’t already. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 100% – what are you waiting for?

Here we go.

1. Remind Yourself This, Everyday.

“This is a college, not a pressure cooker.”

2. Take Care of Each Other.

“Everyone thinks it’s suicide.

The postmortem report says – cause of death: Intense pressure on windpipe resulting in choking. All think the pressure on the jugular killed him.

What about the mental pressure for the last four years? That’s missing in the report.

Engineers are a clever bunch. They haven’t made a machine to measure mental pressure. If they have, all would know this isn’t suicide… it’s murder.”

3. Don’t Memorise Blindly. Understand.

Rancho: But sir, one must get the meaning too. What’s the point of blindly cramming a bookish definition?

Engineering Professor: You think you are smarter than the textbook. Write the textbook definition, mister, if you want to pass.

4. In the darkest of times…

aal izz well

Rancho: Take your hand, put it over your heart and say, “Aal Izz Well.”

Farhan: “All Is Well?”

Rancho: Aal izz well. That day I understood that this heart scares easily. You have to trick it, however big the problem is. Tell your heart, ‘aal izz well, aal izz well.’

Raju: And that solves the problem?

Rancho: No. But you gain the courage to face it.

5. Don’t Obssess Over Your CGPA.

“We’ll study with all our heart, but not just for grades.

To quote a Wise One – Study to be accomplished, not affluent.

Don’t run behind success. Follow behind excellence, success will chase you, pants down.”

6. We’ve All Felt This At Least Once…

(Source)

“We learnt a lesson in human behaviour: your friend fails, you feel bad. Your friend tops, you feel worse.”

7. Go Live Your Life.

(Source)

Raju: “I study hard. How come I still don’t excel?”

Rancho:  “Cause you’re a coward. Scared of the future. With such fear for tomorrow, how will you live today? How will you focus in your studies? Go live your life. I’ve got strange friends, man. One of them is living in fear, and the other one is not living at all!”

8. What’s Your Passion?

(Source)

“Dad, what will happen if I become a photographer? I’ll just earn less, right? My home will be small, my car will be small.

But, dad, I will be happy! I will be really happy. Whatever I do, I’ll be doing it from my heart.”

9. It’s The Journey, Not The Destination

“It took two broken legs to get me up on my feet.

Wasn’t easy to get this attitude. Can’t change it sir.

You keep your job… I’ll keep my attitude. I’m sorry, no offense sir.”

10. We Are More Than Just Circus Lions

Well-Trained or Well-Educated

“When I asked this question, were you excited? Curious? Thrilled that you’ll learn something new?

No. You all got into a frantic race. What’s the use of such methods, even if you come first? Will your knowledge increase? No, just the pressure.

This is a college, not a pressure cooker.

Even a circus lion learns to sit on a chair in fear of the whip.

But you call such a lion ‘well-trained,’ not ‘well-educated.'”
